The Life of Pi the black and white Barbet

I have some news, sad news for me but at the end of the day it was my decision as sometimes you have to accept you are not ''superwoman'' . The lovely Pi, Netis Jitterbug came into my life with encouragement from my Mother, which was a surprise as she had always said I had too many dogs. She also suited my long term breeding plan as she was a lovely combination with a Dutch male that had come into the UK who I had a soft spot for, as his Father was the male I had the failed mating with Betsy the Barbet we lost at 7 years old. Pi passed all her health checks, 4/5 hips, 0/0 elbows, 2 clear eye certificates, D/D locus , VWD type 1 carrier,  Tan, an excellent show critique from France, the list is endless....she was a perfect dog for breeding as she is also of excellent temperament.Pi went to live with a wonderful family, it was a difficult time but I want all my dogs to be happy and Pi was looking sad at times as she is a very affectionate girl, it was a better life for her as I had only ever planned one breeding as there are already so many Barbets with similar genes, afterall I only have 2 hands to stroke dogs , it was  right for her but it took a long time for me to get over as I missed her terribly and felt very guilty. However in early 2016 I finalised my breeding plan for her, late in the day but I had lost my Father in 2014, and my Mother in 2015. So after so much grief what could go wrong ? Firstly the Dutch boy had been removed from breeding, so I chose an English Stud who when Pi was ready for mating drank some stagnant water and was immediately very ill and not feeling very passionate and he remained ill during her fertile time!, not being nervous about travelling we had a 48 hour window to find a male that would be a good combination for the breed in the UK, my first choice in Holland was denied due to Pi being under 30 months, then by chance we found another male in Holland that I was happy with  ( remember at this stage I am thinking of combinations for new blood in the UK and a combination that would work with Martha,) Meanwhile our window for breeding was getting shorter and we knew we were cutting it fine. So a quick dash to Holland arranged, dog wormed, channel tunnel booked last minute, hotel booked. A 5.5 hour delay at Eurotunnel meant we arrived at our hotel at 1am, we had planned to be there at 5pm. Anyway to cut a long story short, we tried first thing in the morning and Pi was really not interested, and timing wise I think we were pushing our luck had we got there at 5pm . As soon as we realised it was too late for Pi we left for home. We waited for her next season, and this time I had decided to try chilled semen from overseas, this failed once again over timings I believe, we don't have instant progesterone checks in the UK so we get our results in 24 hours or longer and this also means nothing over the weekend. In hindsight using a female who had not produced was my error and I also chose a reproduction vet that was useless over communication!. The lovely family who have Pi kindly said I could try again but it is now 2017 and this year ( very shortly) we will become grandparents and 2016 was my window to breed Pi as I also have my lovely Martha (2 failed matings last year is another story!) and her daughter Snoop who has passed her health checks with flying colours. I am only telling the story about Pi as I don't wish to hear rumours that she has been spayed for any other reason. Pi is very happy with her family and my breeding plans have changed yet again as Pi and her husband were to have made a male for Martha in the future! and when you hear that it is all about money...think again as Pi to date has cost me about £8000

Netis Jitterbug known as Pi passes her health checks and confirmation

As you can imagine I am very pleased that Pi has passed her health checks for breeding.

Her hips have been scored with a result of 4 :4 and her elbows scored with a 0 :0  result.

She has passed her eye test so has a clear eye certificate dated June 2015.

This lovely girl with her beautiful markings has just been to France to be confirmed, we attended a 2 day show in Douai and on the first day we were lucky to be judged by the very knowledgeable Monsieur Dupas who placed Pi as Best Junior.

Pi enjoying the limelight.

On the same day Pi was able to take the TAN  ( water retrieve/sociability test) with several other Barbets, once again we were lucky as Monsieur Goubie another expert judge was overseeing the test and I am pleased to say. Pi passed with flying colours.
The last couple of months have been a social whirl for Pi, she had the joy of playing with the pups from Martha and Ooli, The London Pet show, Hips, elbows and eyes done, a weekend in France at the show, and a working test........after all her engagements she then had her hair cut which you can see in the photo at the top of the page.
The details for her 'husband to be' will be published shortly,

Hip Score results and breeding

and the good news is .......Martha has 7/8 hips which means she has now passed her health checks for breeding.
2014 will be another bumper year for the breed in the UK as I hope that we will have the patter of little paws.

Hallie and Martha are both lovely Barbets and are both Grandchildren from the foundation girls in the UK, Betsy and Bepop.

Hallie is a French registered pedigree Barbet,  has the Tan, a clear eye certificate, hip score 5/4, confirmed exc at a dog show in France and proved her character on a shoot in the UK.
Martha formerly a Dutch registered pedigree Barbet ( but shortly will be transferred to the French registration ) has the Tan, a clear eye certificate, hip score 7/8, confirmed exc at a dog show in France, and has now been on a shoot in the UK and proved her steadiness.
Both girls will retrieve to hand with cold game, and both swim well
Both Hallie and Martha are approx 55 in height and weigh approx 20Kg,
Both girls are delightful company and are excellent family dogs

I will be very happy to be able to reproduce little Marthas' and little Hallies'  and I will be choosing   husbands for both girls that will compliment their characters and good health.
It all sounds perfect doesn't it?, I have bred 4 litters and already the breed is sorted and I have perfect Barbets.
Well, there is no such thing as a perfect dog for a start and the Barbet is no different.
The breed is still young in the UK and I still have so much to learn but I can't help but be excited about more puppies :0

BVA Eye tests

Add caption
Prof. Bedford who had never met a Barbet before, suddenly found he had a queue waiting to be tested.Nice to be able to say that all the Barbets that were tested passed with ease, and the dogs were complimented on the quality of the eye that he saw.

Solid Black Barbet boy puppy at 4 weeks old

At the moment he is the smallest puppy, and is completely black. He may be the smallest, but he happily manages to push out the others when it comes to feeding. Like Mr Blue he is responding well to the whistle, and he is normally the first to fall asleep once he has eaten breakfast or dinner so he runs out of steam the fastest. early days but my gut feeling is that he will be a gentle dog.

Dog Beds and Barbets

I have been very naughty and my window shopping at Crufts didn't go to plan as we have new dog beds!
This is a 'Megbed' and is waterproof but quite soft and suitable for two dogs to curl up, they like the fact that they can rest their chins so this has been a big hit. I can spend more as you can buy a fluffy cover. So when I feel the need, I can buy extras!!!!!
More later as two other beds to show you all......

Happiness is....a Barbet with a window view

There might just maybe, possibly, hopefully, a remote chance, that Bepop will see a cat if she waits at a window. She loved the window in Belgium. It was the perfect Barbet window, and she soon learnt the routine of a bit of hanky panky outside, and  she was then rewarded with the window with a view, even the low table with biscuits on it didn't distract her.......Barbets do live happily with cats and other animals, and in fairness to Bepop when she does see a cat she just quivers so I do know by her body language that she has had success, so I am thankful that she doesn't become a manic dog, perhaps she secretly has a 'I Spy' book, and is in competition with Betsy!.

Barbets love snow

Is Betsy stubborn? daft? or just plain happy?
She loves snow and becomes like a garden ornament, she will just sit for hours.

say hello to Deejee

It is always good to hear about youngsters and their health reports. This boy Deejee (all being well) will in 2013 be adding to the UK Barbet population........apologies to Caya as his wife Bepop is going to be unfaithful. Official news soon to be released, but with A hips everything is looking positive for a good combination.

Alexia the Barbet puppy

Isn't she sweet? and she is very well behaved but and there is always a but, she already has the older dogs wrapped around her paws. Training her will be fun as her character at the moment is that she knows best. She is very entertaining in the way she reacts with the other dogs, she loiters for the best chairs in the house and always wins...this girl will go far, but whether I can train her.......watch this space

Hallie has been in the wars

Poor Hallie has an injured hind leg after an impact with Bobby playing in the garden. After a visit to the vets, a small dispute over her treatment (the leg was not broken after initial examination) with the help of a few manic phone calls I decided that crate rest was the best course of treatment with medication from the vets.
A good idea, but not according to Hallie who has never been in a crate and certainly has no plans to start. I tried everything to get her to enter the crate, and only ever did she manage willingly her front legs. Jonty was better as he got in the crate with her, so that worked while he was around. So the next best thing was a bed near where I was working, and I decided it was going to be shredding paperwork day. As you can see, after  a short time she got bored and slept. It has now been a week since her accident and she is off all her medication and has been for a couple of lead walks with no limping and I have allowed her back with the other dogs for play.It is really tough with a young dog keeping them calm and rested, and trying to keep her apart from the others when she so desperately wanted to play.

Happiness is......

Three boys who like running, water and a completely empty beach.Life doesn't get much better for a Barbet.

Barbet puppies everywhere

I know I am biased but I think you all have to admit that Eton does look good.

Hellllllllooooo Eton

I have good vibes about 2013, will it be a bumper year for the Barbet in the UK.
2012 saw the arrival of 19 healthy pups, and in 2013 some of these pups will start being health tested for possible breeding. When I look at Hallie, she is just a babe so it is hard to imagine the future but I hope she will be part of the foundation that we are laying for the Barbet as a breed. As I have said before, without a strong foundation of excellant health and charactor we will not have the stability for the future.

So you want a Barbet?

Betsy, Bepop and Hallie who all insist that they need to be near you at all times. As you can see Barbet pups are not destructive (most of the time!!!) as those wires look rather dangerous, and I had not really noticed before what a mess it is under the desk as I am normally trying not to get dog hair trapped in the chair when I move away from the PC.!So if you want a Barbet in your life, you need space under your desk.

Hallie and her Dad, Eton the brave!

At long last, Hallie met her Dad and she loved him. It wasn't love at first sight as Eton was a bit too playful and she was a little scared but after a couple of hours of grooming she saw him in a different light and the roles were reversed and Eton was looking slightly harassed by a very playful daughter.

A bit of Black retriever history

The British were a powerful force in the dog world, especially with regard to 'sporting breeds' and if you think about working dogs today, the black lab, the flat coat retriever, curly coat retriever, and black cockers, we still value ' the black dog for working'. when doing any research, it does make a difference as to which century you are looking at, as fashions change  and that includes coat colours with the dates. The text below is just one publication, a snippet into the dog world in 1871. Its hard to imagine that the Golden retriever was not a breed fixed in type in 1871. So in 1871 what was the situation in Europe, our retrievers were mainly black ?

Grandpa Caya the Barbet

With so many new barbet puppies in the UK, I thought it would be good for you all to see 'Grandpa' Caya who is owned and very much loved by Valerie in France.
Caya is the Father of 12 puppies born in the UK in 2008, two  from that litter have now produced a staggering 27 puppies this year alone. Caya is playing a huge role supporting the British Barbet, so its wonderful to share his photo.
